Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter (no substitutes)
  • 1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 c. nut meats, chopped
  • 1/2 c. chopped dates or raisins

Instructions

  1. Cream butter with sugar; add egg.
  2. Beat well.
  3. Stir in flour mixture alternately with buttermilk.
  4. Add nuts and fruit.
  5. Pour into a 3-quart Pyrex bowl and steam, uncovered, in a heavy kettle with tight fitting lid for 1 1/2 hours.
  6. No peeking!
  7. Be sure water is at least 2 inches up sides of bowl.
  8. Serve with Vanilla Sauce.
