- Boil sugar, water, and Karo syrup until it will spin a thread.
- Beat egg whites stiff while syrup is boiling (not too dry).
- Pour half of the syrup over egg whites slowly, beating at 10 to 12 on the mixer.
- Let the other half of the syrup cook until it bubbles very thick.
- Pour this thick syrup over the first part and beat until stiff and cool.
- Do not spread on cake until it has cooled or it will be sticky.
- If it gets too hard, add a little hot water or sit the pot in hot water.
- If weather is pretty, add cream of tartar; if not, do not add, then add vanilla.
