Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 cups unsifted flour

Instructions

  1. Put yeast into warm water and add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let stand a few minutes until the yeast begins to work.
  2. Add the remaining sugar, egg, shortening, and salt to the yeast mixture. Beat with an electric mixer.
  3. Add the flour gradually and mix on low speed until well combined.
  4. Prepare a floured surface to put the dough on.
  5. Turn the dough onto the floured board and knead lightly. Roll out the dough to less than 1/2 inch thickness.
  6. Brush melted butter over the rolled dough and sprinkle with a cinnamon-sugar mixture. Raisins may be added if desired.
  7. Roll up the dough as for a jelly roll. Slice into 1/2 inch pieces.
  8. Place the slices on a greased cookie sheet and let rise until double in size.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown.

Tips & Substitutions

For best results, ensure your water is warm but not hot, as high temperatures can kill the yeast. If you don't have shortening, butter or margarine can be used as a substitute. Adding a tablespoon of milk can also enhance the dough's texture. If you prefer a sweeter roll, consider increasing the sugar slightly or adding a touch of honey.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these rolls warm, brushed with melted butter for an extra touch of richness. They pair beautifully with a side of Waldori Salad or can be enjoyed as a breakfast treat with jam or honey. These rolls also make for a delightful addition to holiday gatherings, complementing dishes like Easter 'Bird Nests'.

Storage & Reheating

After baking, let the rolls cool completely before storing them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply place them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes until warmed through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use instant yeast instead of active dry yeast?

Yes, you can use instant yeast as a substitute. Just mix it directly with the dry ingredients and skip the step of dissolving it in water. The dough may rise slightly faster, so keep an eye on it during the rising phase.

How can I make these rolls healthier?

To make the rolls healthier, consider using whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour. You can also reduce the sugar amount and replace shortening with a healthier fat, such as avocado oil or unsweetened applesauce, which will add moisture without extra calories.

Can these rolls be made ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it after kneading. When you're ready to bake, allow the dough to come to room temperature before rolling and cutting. Alternatively, bake them and store in the freezer, reheating when needed.
