Delightful Dutch Easter Men are charming egg-shaped bread rolls decorated as little figures, perfect for festive celebrations and making fun, edible centerpieces for spring gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • about 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 9 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons oleo or butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups milk

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the dry yeast in warm water.
  2. Melt the butter.
  3. Mix the melted butter with cold milk and add to the yeast mixture.
  4. Stir in salt and gradually add the flour, mixing to form a dough.
  5. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Knead the dough until smooth.
  7. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.
  8. Shape each portion into an oblong roll about 5 inches long.
  9. Place an egg slightly above the center of each roll.
  10. Cut slits at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 o'clock positions on the roll.
  11. Pull the dough at each slit to shape arms and legs.
  12. Arrange the arms over and across the egg to resemble a figure.
  13. Place the shaped rolls on greased cookie sheets and cover with a kitchen towel.
  14. Let the rolls rise until doubled in size.
  15. Bake at 350° to 375° Fahrenheit until lightly browned and the eggs are cooked through.
