- Sift flour and 1/3 cup of sugar together.
- Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles cornmeal.
- Scald milk and add tap water.
- Dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in 1/4 cup lukewarm water and let it sit until frothy.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture.
- Add the water and cooled milk to the mixture.
- Mix well to form a dough.
- Place the dough on a floured surface and knead thoroughly.
- Place the kneaded dough back in a bowl and let it rise until doubled in size.
- Knead the dough again and refrigerate until ready to use.
- Roll out the chilled dough, shape into rolls, and let rise for 2 to 3 hours.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) until golden brown.
