Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • dash of salt
  • 2 1/2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 packages RapidRise yeast
  • 6 cups self-rising flour

Instructions

  1. Place yeast in 2 1/2 cups of lukewarm water and set aside.
  2. Mix 4 cups of self-rising flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar together.
  3. Add melted shortening and the yeast water to the dry ingredients.
  4. Mix well until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Take 2 cups of self-rising flour and incorporate it into the dough mixture.
  6. Put about two handfuls of flour on a clean countertop.
  7. Turn the dough onto the floured surface.
  8. Grease your fingers and knead the dough until smooth.
  9. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size.
  10. Punch down the dough and shape into rolls or bread.
  11. Place the shaped dough into greased muffin tins or bread pans.
  12. Let the dough rise again until doubled in size.
  13. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes until golden brown.
