Festive Fruit Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 stick (1/2 c.) margarine
  • 1/3 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/3 c. packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. water
  • 1 c. sifted flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 c. chopped candied fruit

Instructions

  1. Melt margarine in a saucepan.
  2. Remove from heat.
  3. Add sugars and water; blend.
  4. Stir in flour and baking powder.
  5. Add egg and vanilla.
  6. Beat well.
  7. Add nuts and candied fruit.
  8. Stir lightly to combine.
  9. Pour into a 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan (rubbed with margarine). Bake in a moderate oven at 350° about 30 minutes.
  10. Do not overbake. Yields 18 bars (1 1/2 x 3-inches).
