Four O'Clock Tea Scones

Ingredients

  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 4 Tbsp. cold shortening
  • 1/2 to 2/3 c. milk
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • melted butter and sugar

Instructions

  1. Sift dry ingredients together.
  2. Cut in shortening.
  3. Add milk to egg and then add to flour mixture, gradually adding more milk if necessary.
  4. Knead lightly on a floured board.
  5. Roll to 1/2-inch thickness.
  6. Cut into wedges and place on greased baking sheet. Brush with butter and sugar on top.
  7. Bake in hot oven at 400° for 15 minutes.
  8. Makes 15 (4-inch) scones.
