French Toast Strata

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. loaf unsliced French bread
  • 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, cubed
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 1/2 c. milk, light cream or half and half
  • 6 Tbsp. butter, melted
  • 1/4 c. maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Cut bread into cubes (about 12 cups).
  2. Grease a 3-quart rectangular baking dish.
  3. Place half of bread cubes in dish.
  4. Top with cream cheese cubes and remaining bread cubes.
  5. Combine eggs, milk, melted butter and syrup in a mixing bowl or blender.
  6. Beat or process until well combined.
  7. Pour egg mixture over bread and cheese cubes.
  8. Slightly press down to moisten.
  9. Cover and refrigerate for 2 to 24 hours.
  10. Bake, uncovered, in a 325° oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until center appears set and edges are golden.
  11. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
  12. Serve with syrup. Serves 6 to 8.
