Ingredients

  • 1 qt. water
  • 4 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. Clorox
  • 1/2 tsp. alum

Instructions

  1. Take one roll of fiber paper towels (Bounty).
  2. Cut the roll in half to make two short rolls.
  3. Remove the cardboard tube from each roll.
  4. Place the prepared rolls in your choice of container: Tupperware go-between pitcher, square modular #3, Signature Series #3, or a plastic shortening can.

Tips & Substitutions

When preparing the water solution, ensure the sugar is completely dissolved to enhance the longevity of the flowers. Instead of Clorox, consider using a few drops of bleach for a more natural preservative effect. For a more fragrant solution, you can add a few drops of essential oil. If you're looking for an eco-friendly alternative, experiment with vinegar instead of Clorox. This method pairs beautifully with Hawaiian Beets for a colorful presentation.

Serving Suggestions

These prepared rolls can be displayed in various containers, enhancing any table setting. Consider pairing them with fresh arrangements of seasonal flowers for an eye-catching centerpiece. They also work well alongside a light snack like Mint Pastries or a refreshing drink, making them perfect for gatherings or brunch. For an elegant touch, add a ribbon around the container.

Storage & Reheating

Store the prepared rolls in a cool, dry place to maintain their effectiveness. If you're using a container like Tupperware, make sure it is airtight to prevent moisture from compromising the rolls. It's best to use the solution within a week for optimal results. To refresh the rolls, simply soak them in the prepared mixture again for a few hours before using.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this solution for any type of flowers?

While this solution works well for many cut flowers, softer blooms may benefit from a gentler approach. Always test on a small batch first. If you're working with delicate flowers, consider reducing the amount of sugar or using a different preserving method such as floral preservatives specifically designed for fresh flowers.

How long will the flowers last in this solution?

Typically, flowers can last anywhere from several days to a week when placed in this preserving solution. However, the longevity can vary based on the type of flower and environmental conditions. Make sure to change the water solution every few days to keep the flowers fresh and vibrant.

Is there a substitute for alum in this recipe?

If alum is unavailable, you can try using a small amount of vinegar as an alternative. Vinegar can help to keep the water clean and reduce bacterial growth, which is essential for prolonging the life of the flowers. Just ensure to use it sparingly to avoid altering the pH balance too much.
