Ingredients

  • 1 cup white cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon butter or cooking oil
  • 1 scant teaspoon salt
  • 1 to 1.5 cups boiling water

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the cornbread meal, butter or oil, and salt.
  2. Instantly pour boiling water over the mixture.
  3. Beat quickly and vigorously until well combined.
  4. Have a bowl of cold water nearby to dip your hands.
  5. Take about 1 to 2 tablespoons of the mixture, form into a flat patty or round.
  6. Either fry immediately or place on waxed paper until all pones are shaped.
  7. Heat about 1.5 inches of cooking oil in a skillet until hot.
  8. Drop the pones into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, ensuring the inside is cooked through.
