Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup firm margarine or butter
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Fudge-Cream Cheese Filling

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Cut margarine into flour and salt until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Sprinkle in water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and vanilla, tossing with a fork until all flour is moistened and dough cleans side of bowl.
  4. Divide dough into halves. Roll each half into a rectangle, 12 x 8 inches, on a cloth-covered board generously sprinkled with sugar.
  5. Cut each rectangle lengthwise into four 2-inch strips.
  6. Prepare fudge-cream cheese filling.
  7. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of filling into 6 mounds, 1 inch apart, onto one strip; top with another strip.
  8. Cut into six 2-inch squares; seal edges securely.
  9. Place squares about 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  10. Repeat with remaining strips and filling.
  11. Bake until light golden brown, about 15 minutes.
  12. Immediately remove from cookie sheet and cool.
