Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1 1/2 c. warm water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 4 c. flour
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water.
  2. Add the table salt and sugar to the yeast mixture.
  3. Blend in the flour until a dough forms.
  4. Put the dough on a bread board and knead for 5 minutes or until smooth.
  5. Divide the dough into 4 equal parts.
  6. Roll each part separately into a rope.
  7. Cut each rope into 5 equal pieces, yielding 20 small pieces.
  8. Roll each piece into a rope and shape into a pretzel.
  9. Place the pretzels on lightly greased cookie sheets.
  10. Flip over each pretzel; brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  11. Let the pretzels rise for 20 minutes.
  12. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
  13. Cool the pretzels, then place in an airtight container and freeze.
  14. Thaw at room temperature and warm in the oven before serving.
  15. Serve plain or dip in cheese or mustard.
