Grandmas Date Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. dates, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 3/4 c. margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 3/4 c. + 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 3/4 tsp. baking powder

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over dates. Add soda. Set aside and cool completely. Cream sugar and margarine. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat well. Sift flour, salt and baking powder together and add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Stir in cooled dates. Pour into greased and floured 9 X 13 pan. Sprinkle with 1 1/2 cup chocolate chips, 1 cup walnuts, chopped and 1/3 cup sugar. Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes.
