Gran'S Clamchowder

- Steam open the clams, then cool and chop them.
- Fry the bacon until well done. Remove and set aside.
- In the bacon fat, fry the onions and celery until browned.
- Use the water from steaming the clams to make the broth.
- Add water to taste to dilute the broth if needed.
- Add carrots, celery, onions, crushed tomatoes, bacon and fat, pepper, and thyme to the broth.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer until the carrots are soft.
- Add the chopped clams and simmer for an additional 15 minutes.
