  7. Bake slowly at about 300°F for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until flavors meld.

Tips & Substitutions

For added flavor, consider using sweet Italian sausage or a mix of hot and sweet varieties. If you prefer a vegetarian option, substitute the sausage with plant-based sausage and use vegetable broth instead of water. Fresh herbs can also enhance the taste, so feel free to use them instead of dried. This dish pairs beautifully with Italian Sausage In Tomato Sauce for a hearty meal.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the hoagie sausage sandwiches on crusty hoagie rolls or sub buns. You can top them with provolone or mozzarella cheese and toast the sandwiches for a melty finish. Pair with a side salad or crispy fries for a complete meal. A fresh green salad or Pasta With Peas And Sausage complements the richness of the sandwiches nicely.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place the sandwich filling in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally until warmed through. Alternatively, you can microwave individual portions in a microwave-safe dish, covered, for 1-2 minutes, or until hot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of sausage for this recipe?

Absolutely! You can use chicken, turkey, or even a plant-based sausage for a lighter or vegetarian option. Just ensure that the sausage is not smoked, as it may alter the flavor of the dish.

How can I make the sauce thicker?

If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can add a tablespoon of tomato paste or let the sauce simmer longer to reduce it. You can also mix in a cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water) during the simmering process to thicken it up.

What can I do with leftover sauce?

Leftover sauce can be used in various dishes. Try it over pasta for a quick meal, or use it as a base for Italian recipes such as pizza or baked ziti. It can also be frozen for future use, making it a convenient option for busy nights.
