  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs

  16. Beat 1 egg white with 1 tablespoon water and brush over the loaf.
  17. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 45 minutes, until golden brown.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using whole milk instead of regular milk. If you want to add a twist, you could substitute the candied cherries with dried cranberries or apricots. Ensure the water for the yeast is not too hot, as it can kill the yeast. A warm kitchen will help the dough rise more effectively.

Serving Suggestions

Houska Christmas Bread is delightful served warm with a pat of butter or alongside a cup of tea or coffee. It also pairs beautifully with Peruvian Potato Salad for a festive brunch spread. Consider slicing it for breakfast or using it for French toast. This bread can be a lovely centerpiece for holiday gatherings.

Storage & Reheating

Once the Houska Christmas Bread is completely cooled, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store it at room temperature for up to three days. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use instant yeast instead of dry yeast?

Yes, you can use instant yeast in place of dry yeast. Just mix it directly with the flour instead of dissolving it in water. This will save you a step and can speed up the rising process.

How can I make the bread less sweet?

To reduce the sweetness, you can decrease the amount of sugar to 1/2 cup or even 1/3 cup. You might also consider adding a bit more salt to balance the flavors. Just keep in mind that it may slightly alter the texture.

What can I add to enhance the flavor?

You can enhance the flavor by adding spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg, which complement the sweetness of the bread. Additionally, incorporating citrus zest, like orange or lemon, can provide a refreshing contrast to the richness of the bread.
