Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk and let it cool.
  2. Add sugar, shortening, and salt to the cooled milk.
  3. Dissolve the dry yeast in warm water.
  4. Add the yeast mixture to the milk mixture.
  5. Gradually add sifted flour, mixing until the dough is not too stiff.
  6. Turn the dough into a greased bowl, grease the top, and cover with a cloth.
  7. Let the dough rise for at least 2 hours.
  8. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured board.
  9. Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  10. Cut into rounds using a small juice glass or donut hole cutter.
  11. Melt a stick of butter in a small bowl.
  12. Dip each roll into the melted butter.
  13. Place the rolls on an ungreased cookie sheet and let rise, uncovered, for 2 hours.
  14. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for about 8 to 10 minutes.
