Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 1/2 cups applesauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup shortening

Instructions

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl.
  2. Pour the batter into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  3. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 40 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  4. Let the cake cool slightly before frosting with your choice of frosting.
