Ingredients

  • 2 c. whole milk
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. butter, softened
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cardamon
  • 1 envelope yeast
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 1 egg (at room temperature)
  • 7 to 8 c. flour
  • 1 c. mixed fruit and peel
  • 1 c. golden raisins

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan scald milk; stir in sugar, butter, salt and cardamon.
  2. In a large bowl dissolve yeast in warm water.
  3. Stir in milk mixture, egg and half the flour; beat to mix well.
  4. Stir in candied fruit, raisins and enough remaining flour to make dough stiff enough to knead.
  5. Turn out dough on floured surface; cover dough with bowl and let rest 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Knead until smooth.
  7. Place in greased bowl; let rise until double.
  8. Punch down and divide in half.
  9. Shape in ball.
  10. Place in greased pie tin. Let rise 1 1/2 hours.
  11. Bake in 350° oven for 40 to 45 minutes.
