- Melt butter or margarine in a large pot.
- Add sliced linguica and fry until browned.
- Add half a pot of water and bring to a boil.
- Add peeled and chunked potatoes and cook on high heat until boiling.
- Add kidney beans, chopped cabbage (if using), chopped kale, salt, and pepper.
- Stir in some ketchup for color.
- Reduce heat to medium and cook until potatoes and soup are done, about 20 minutes.
- Turn to low and simmer until ready to serve.
