Karl's Bread boasts hearty whole wheat and bread flours with a touch of molasses, resulting in a flavorful, chewy loaf perfect for wholesome sandwiches or toast.

Ingredients

  • 2 qt. whole wheat flour
  • 1 qt. hi-gluten bread flour
  • 1 c. oat bran
  • 2 Tbsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 3 packets yeast
  • 1/2 c. oil
  • 1/2 c. molasses

Instructions

  1. By hand, mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Dissolve oil and molasses in a quart measure of hot water.
  3. Combine the wet mixture with the dry mixture.
  4. Add one additional cup of hot water.
  5. When dry ingredients are thoroughly moistened, knead for 10 minutes.
  6. Cover with a tea towel and let rise in the oven with the oven light on.
  7. Remove, knead thoroughly, divide into 5 loaves, knead and shape.
  8. Let rise without a towel.
  9. Bake for 40 minutes at 325°F, shifting around at 25 minutes.
  10. Turn out on wire racks, butter the top using a cloth.
  11. Cool, slice, butter, and eat!
