Ingredients

  • 3 cups warm water
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 4 cups white flour

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, molasses, and dry yeast in a large bowl; let stand for 5 minutes.
  2. Add oil and 4 cups of whole wheat flour; beat about 110 strokes.
  3. Add enough white flour to make a stiff dough.
  4. Knead until smooth and elastic.
  5. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough, cover, and let it rise again.
  7. Form into 3 loaves and place in well-greased bread pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 50 minutes.
