Ingredients

  • 3 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons lemon oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ounce powdered ammonia
  • 6 to 7 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Stir the powdered ammonia into 1/4 cup warm water and allow it to stand until softened.
  2. Cream the shortening and sugar until well blended.
  3. Add beaten eggs and blend well.
  4. Add salt and lemon oil to the mixture.
  5. Add the ammonia-water mixture to the milk, then alternately mix in the flour until the dough reaches a proper consistency to handle.
  6. Press the dough out on a well-floured board with your hands.
  7. Cut the dough into squares or circles as desired.
  8. Bake in a 400°F oven until light brown.
