- Turn the dough out onto a floured board and work in the remaining 1/2 cup of flour.
- Shape the dough into 3 round loaves and place in greased 8-inch cake pans, or shape into two 9-inch loaf pans for sandwiches.
- Let the loaves rise until they reach the top of the pans, about 1 hour.
- Bake at 375°F for 10 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350°F and bake for an additional 30 minutes.
- Brush the tops of the loaves with margarine and cool on racks.
Tips & Substitutions
For a richer flavor, consider using dark beer instead of water. You can substitute the shortening with butter for a more traditional taste. If you prefer a different spice profile, feel free to adjust the seeds or omit them entirely. Ensure your yeast is fresh for best results, and knead the dough thoroughly for a good texture.
Serving Suggestions
Serve Limpa bread warm with a spread of butter or alongside a hearty soup. It pairs beautifully with *Quince Preserves("Liko") for a delightful contrast. Consider serving it as part of a sandwich with roasted meats or cheese. It also complements side dishes like Bowen Avenue Salad for a complete meal.
Storage & Reheating
Once cooled, store the Limpa bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply place slices in a toaster or warm the whole loaf in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use different types of flour for this recipe?
Yes, you can substitute some or all of the bread flour with whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor. Just keep in mind that whole wheat flour may require additional liquid to achieve the right dough consistency.
What should I do if my dough doesn't rise?
If your dough isn't rising, it may be due to inactive yeast or a too-cool environment. Ensure your yeast is fresh and consider placing the dough in a warm area, such as an oven turned off with the light on, to encourage rising.
Can I add other ingredients to the dough?
Absolutely! You can incorporate ingredients like nuts, dried fruits, or seeds for added texture and flavor. Just be mindful of the overall moisture content in the dough when adding additional ingredients.
