Ingredients

  • 1 scant tsp. lye (caustic potash)
  • 1 gal. water

Instructions

  1. Place a scant teaspoon of lye into an iron kettle (never use aluminum).
  2. Carefully add one gallon of water to the kettle.
  3. Allow the mixture to boil up and produce a caustic solution when the lye contacts the water.
  4. Add the corn to the solution and stir.
  5. Let the mixture stand overnight.
  6. Use only an enameled or stainless steel spoon for stirring.
