Ingredients

  • 1 pkg yeast
  • 4 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 c lukewarm water
  • 5 c flour
  • 2 Tbsp salt
  • 3/4 c shortening

Instructions

  1. Mix yeast, sugar, and water and let sit until frothy.
  2. Add enough flour to thicken the mixture and let it rise until doubled in size.
  3. Sift flour and salt together in a large bowl.
  4. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles crumbs.
  5. Pour in the yeast batter into the flour mixture.
  6. Work the mixture until it forms a dough, but do not work until it becomes hard.
  7. Let the dough rise until it doubles in size.
  8. Divide the dough into rolls and place them on a baking sheet.
  9. Let the rolls rise again until nearly doubled in size.
  10. Bake at 400°F until golden brown.
