- Bake and cool the cake as directed on the package.
- Remove the cake from the pan and slice off the top to make it flat.
- Split the cake into two layers by marking with toothpicks and cutting with a serrated knife.
- Place the bottom layer on a serving plate.
- Stir cinnamon, nutmeg, maple flavoring, and toasted pecans into the whipped topping.
- Spread 1 1/2 cups of the topping mixture over the bottom layer.
- Place the second cake layer on top of the first.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining topping mixture.
- Garnish with pecan halves if desired.
