Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 stick butter or margarine

Instructions

  1. Add 1 cup milk and 2 3/4 cups sugar to a large boiler.
  2. Bring this mixture to a rolling boil.
  3. In a small skillet, caramelize 1/4 cup sugar.
  4. Pour the caramelized sugar into the boiling milk and sugar mixture.
  5. Boil, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
  6. Pour the thickened mixture into a mixing bowl with margarine.
  7. Beat well. If too thick to spread easily, add milk 1 teaspoon at a time until the right consistency is achieved.
  8. Spread evenly over cake layers.
