Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  3. Add raisins to the boiling mixture and simmer for a few minutes.
  4. In a mixing bowl, cream together shortening and spices: cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
  5. Add the raisin mixture to the creamed shortening and mix well.
  6. Stir in flour and baking powder until the batter is smooth.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased baking dish.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
