Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 eggs
  • 6 to 6 1/2 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over rolled oats, molasses, shortening, and salt.
  2. Cool the mixture to lukewarm temperature.
  3. Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  4. Add yeast, eggs, and 3 cups of flour to the oat mixture.
  5. Beat until smooth.
  6. Stir in enough of the remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  7. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
  8. Place in a greased bowl and cover.
  9. Let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  10. Punch down the dough.
  11. Shape into rolls and place in a shallow pan.
  12. Cover loosely and let rise until doubled in size, 30 to 40 minutes.
  13. Bake in a 350°F oven for 20 to 25 minutes.
  14. Brush with melted butter after baking.
