Ingredients

  • 2 cups bread, broken in pieces
  • 1/2 cup raisins, optional
  • 1 quart milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • sprinkle of nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a square baking dish.
  2. Cover the bottom with torn bread pieces.
  3. In a bowl, beat eggs and mix with milk, sugar, salt, and vanilla.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread in the dish and sprinkle with nutmeg.
  5. Place the baking dish in a pan of hot water and bake for one hour or until brown.
