Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/3 c. lukewarm water
  • 2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • flour
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. (heaping) baking powder
  • 1 tsp. (heaping) salt

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water.
  2. Scald milk, sugar, and shortening; do not boil.
  3. Cool the mixture to lukewarm temperature.
  4. Add the dissolved yeast to the mixture.
  5. Add enough flour to make a soft batter and beat well.
  6. Cover the bowl and let it set for 1 hour, until the mixture doubles in volume.
  7. Add soda, baking powder, and salt; beat well.
  8. Add enough flour to make a stiff dough.
  9. Knead the dough well to make a fine mixture.
  10. Refrigerate the dough for several hours for easier kneading and less stickiness.
  11. Make as many rolls as desired and dip each in melted shortening, butter, or oleo.
  12. Place the rolls in a greased pan and let rise until doubled in bulk.
  13. Keep the dough in the refrigerator and use as needed, within 5 days.
  14. If refrigerated, let the dough rise for 1 to 2 hours before baking.
  15. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
