- Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water.
- Scald milk, sugar, and shortening; do not boil.
- Cool the mixture to lukewarm temperature.
- Add the dissolved yeast to the mixture.
- Add enough flour to make a soft batter and beat well.
- Cover the bowl and let it set for 1 hour, until the mixture doubles in volume.
- Add soda, baking powder, and salt; beat well.
- Add enough flour to make a stiff dough.
- Knead the dough well to make a fine mixture.
- Refrigerate the dough for several hours for easier kneading and less stickiness.
- Make as many rolls as desired and dip each in melted shortening, butter, or oleo.
- Place the rolls in a greased pan and let rise until doubled in bulk.
- Keep the dough in the refrigerator and use as needed, within 5 days.
- If refrigerated, let the dough rise for 1 to 2 hours before baking.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
