Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter or shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup milk (approximately)
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine

Instructions

  1. Sift together flour, sugar, salt, cream of tartar, and baking soda.
  2. Cut the shortening into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add milk gradually to form a soft dough.
  4. Roll the dough to about 1/4‑inch thickness, spread with butter and brown sugar, then roll up like a jelly roll and slice into rounds.
  5. Place the slices in a greased muffin tin.
  6. Add 1/2 teaspoon of jelly or jam on top of each muffin.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
