Ingredients

  • 3 oz. baking chocolate
  • 1 c. hot water
  • 1 tsp. red food coloring
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 1/2 c. cake flour, sifted
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sour cream

Instructions

  1. Melt the chocolate in hot water with red food coloring and baking soda. Stir and set aside.
  2. Cream together the sugar, shortening, eggs, and salt until fluffy.
  3. Add the flour and sour cream alternately, in thirds, to the creamed mixture.
  4. Add the chocolate mixture and beat at medium speed for 2 minutes.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
