Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 large tart apples
  • pastry for 2-crust pie
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons oleo or butter

Instructions

  1. Pare and core the apples; cut them in quarters and slice thin.
  2. Line a 9-inch pie pan with pastry.
  3. Mix sugar, flour, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
  4. Rub a little of the sugar mixture into the pastry.
  5. Arrange the sliced apples, overlapping in the pie pan.
  6. Dot the apples with butter.
  7. Cut slits in the top crust.
  8. Moisten the edges of the lower crust and place the top crust over the apples; press edges together, trim, and flute.
  9. Brush the top with slightly beaten egg white or sprinkle lightly with sugar.
  10. Bake at 425°F for 40 to 45 minutes or until the apples are tender.
