Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package yeast
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 cup shortening

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk and let it cool to lukewarm.
  2. Add shortening and salt to the milk mixture.
  3. Stir in yeast and 2 1/2 cups of flour; beat until smooth.
  4. Cover and let the mixture rise until bubbly.
  5. Mix spices with sugar and beaten eggs.
  6. Combine the spice mixture with the bubbly yeast mixture.
  7. Add remaining flour gradually to form a kneadable dough.
  8. Knead until smooth, then cover and let rise until doubled in size.
  9. Roll the dough out to 1/2-inch thickness and cut into donuts.
  10. Let the cut donuts rise on a board until doubled in size.
  11. Fry in deep fat at 375°F until golden brown, about 8 minutes.
