Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Re-sift flour with sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add egg, shortening, milk, and vanilla to dry mixture.
  3. Stir just until all of the flour is moistened.
  4. Stir in chopped walnuts.
  5. Turn the batter into a greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan or divide between two greased No. 2 1/2 cans.
  6. Bake at 350°F for about 1 hour and 20 minutes for rectangular loaf or for 1 hour and 10 minutes for round loaf.
