Ingredients

  • 1 large Vidalia onion
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 c. cracker crumbs or bread crumbs
  • vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • commercial dark honey mustard or Ranch-style salad dressing

Instructions

  1. Peel the onion, leaving the root end intact.
  2. Cut the onion vertically into quarters, cutting to within 1/2 inch of the root end.
  3. Cut each quarter into thirds.
  4. Dip the onion in the beaten egg, then coat with flour, followed by cracker crumbs or bread crumbs.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully fry the coated onion until golden brown and crispy, about 8-10 minutes.
  7. Drain on paper towels and serve with honey mustard or Ranch-style salad dressing.
