Ingredients

  • 5 lb potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 4 large onions, sliced
  • milk
  • butter
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten

Instructions

  1. Cook the peeled and sliced potatoes until tender.
  2. Mash the cooked potatoes with milk and butter until smooth.
  3. Cook the sliced onions until soft.
  4. Brown the onions in butter or oil until caramelized.
  5. Mix the browned onions into the mashed potatoes thoroughly.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish and bake uncovered at 350°F for 15 minutes.
  7. Brush the top of the casserole with the beaten egg yolk before baking.
  8. Bake until the top is golden brown.
