Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 3 Tbsp. warm water
  • 4 c. self-rising flour
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 4 Tbsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water and let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Warm the buttermilk and add the dissolved yeast.
  3. Let the mixture sit for at least 10 minutes to activate the yeast.
  4. Add sugar to the mixture.
  5. Sift the self-rising flour.
  6. Cut the shortening into the flour mixture until crumbly.
  7. Combine all ingredients together to form a dough.
  8. Roll out the dough on a floured surface.
  9. Let the rolled-out dough rise for at least 10 minutes to up to 1 hour.
  10. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 10 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
