Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons grated orange rind
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • 2-1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Beat together 1 cup sugar, shortening, egg, vanilla, and grated orange rind.
  3. Add orange juice and mix well.
  4. Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt until combined.
  5. Shape dough into walnut-sized balls.
  6. Combine 1/4 cup sugar with cinnamon in a small bowl.
  7. Dip each ball into the cinnamon-sugar mixture and place on a baking sheet.
  8. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass dipped in additional sugar.
  9. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until delicately browned.
