Ingredients

  • 2 c. (500 ml) whole wheat flour
  • 2 c. (500 ml) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. (10 ml) baking powder
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 to 1/2 c. rolled oats

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cheese.
  2. In a second bowl, combine the syrup, beaten egg, and buttermilk.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix just enough to thoroughly combine.
  4. Knead the dough about 10 to 12 times on a surface sprinkled with oats.
  5. Mold into a 7-inch (17.5 cm) ball and place on a greased baking sheet.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 to 50 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped underneath.
  7. Cool completely before serving or rewarming.
