Ingredients

  • 8 egg whites
  • 2 2/3 cups sugar
  • 2 cups butter, softened
  • 8 egg yolks, well beaten
  • 3 1/4 cups sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Beat egg whites in a large mixer bowl until soft peaks form. Gradually add 6 tablespoons of sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
  2. Cream remaining sugar and softened butter in a large mixer bowl until light and fluffy.
  3. Add well-beaten egg yolks to the creamed mixture; beat well.
  4. Sift flour three times.
  5. Mix vanilla extract with half and half in a small bowl.
  6. Add the flour and vanilla mixture to the creamed mixture alternately, beating well after each addition.
  7. Beat at low speed for 10 minutes.
  8. Add egg whites by tablespoonfuls, stirring vigorously.
  9. Pour the batter into a lightly greased 10-inch tube pan.
  10. Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  11. Invert the pan onto a wire rack to cool.
  12. Cool in the pan for several minutes, then loosen edges.
  13. Remove the cake to a serving plate.
