Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup water warm
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 Tbsp sugar heaping
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp shortening heaping

Instructions

  1. Soften yeast in 1/4 cup warm water; set aside until remaining hot water, shortening, salt, and sugar cool to lukewarm.
  2. Stir in 2 cups flour; beat well.
  3. Add remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough.
  4. Turn on floured surface and knead until satiny, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  5. Let sit for 10 minutes and knead again a few minutes.
  6. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the surface.
  7. Let rise in a warm place until double in bulk.
  8. Punch down the dough; let rise again for 1 hour until double.
  9. Divide the dough into two portions.
  10. Shape each portion into a small ball; set aside for 10 minutes.
  11. Place in loaf pans; let rise until double in size, about 1 hour.
  12. Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 45 minutes.
