Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast or 1 cake yeast
  • 1/4 c. water
  • 1 c. scalded milk
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Soften yeast in warm water or cake yeast in lukewarm water. Add milk, sugar, shortening, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Cool until lukewarm.
  3. Add 1 cup flour; beat well.
  4. Beat in yeast and egg.
  5. Gradually add remaining flour to form soft dough, beating well.
  6. Cover; let stand in warm place until double in size, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  7. Turn out on floured surface; shape as desired.
