- Combine the yeast and warm water in a mixing bowl and let it sit until foamy.
- Add sugar, shortening, salt, and cooled milk to the yeast mixture and mix well.
- Beat in the eggs, then gradually add the sifted flour, beating well after each addition until the dough is smooth.
- Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for 15 minutes.
- Turn the risen dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly to coat with flour.
- Roll out the dough into a rectangle and spread it with your chosen filling, leaving a 1/3 inch border.
- Starting from one edge, roll up the dough as for a jelly roll, sealing the edge to form a roll.
- Place the roll seam-side down on a greased baking sheet.
- Brush the top with cream and cover with a cloth, then let it rise in a warm place until light and doubled in size.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
