Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 (1 oz.) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Gradually add sugar to shortening; cream until light and fluffy.
  2. Blend in vanilla and cooled, melted chocolate.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Sift together flour, soda, and salt.
  5. Add to creamed mixture, alternately with milk, beating well after each addition.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake in a 350°F oven for 20 to 25 minutes.
  7. Frost to your liking.
