Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup melted shortening or Wesson oil
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Combine melted shortening or oil, white sugar, and molasses in a bowl.
  2. Sift together all-purpose flour, salt, soda, ginger, and cinnamon.
  3. Add the sifted dry ingredients alternately with hot water to the mixture, beating until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased and floured pan (6 x 10-inch or 9 x 9-inch).
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 40 minutes.
  6. Serve warm for the best flavor.
