Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups plain flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1 cup sweet milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Grease and flour two 9 1/2-inch cake pans.
  2. Sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt into a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add shortening, 2/3 of the milk, and vanilla to the dry ingredients.
  4. Mix at low speed until the dry ingredients are dampened.
  5. Beat at medium speed for 2 minutes.
  6. Add the remaining 1/3 of the milk and eggs.
  7. Beat at low speed until well mixed, then beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared pans.
  9. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for about 25 minutes.
